When God blessed Texas with heaps of sun, he must have known folks would need the occasional reprieve. Locals love to get out on the state’s lakes, springs, and rivers, and no place is better situated than Marble Falls to take advantage of them all.

Located in the heart of Hill Country, about an hour northwest of Austin, Marble Falls is surrounded by water, rolling hills, and outdoor adventures. Lake Marble Falls, a reservoir of the Colorado River, features kayaking, boating, wakesurfing, wakeboarding, fishing, paddle boarding, swimming, cliff jumping, and more.
Marble Falls is also surrounded by the Highland Lakes, which includes Inks Lake, Lake Travis, Lake Buchanan, and Lake LBJ. Here are our favorite ways to make a splash in the Marble Falls area.

Lake Marble Falls
In 1951, the construction of Starcke Dam on the Colorado River was finished, which created Lake Marble Falls. In the decades since, locals and visitors alike have flocked to the lake for water sports of all types. Lakeside Park and Beach is the perfect place to throw down your beach towel. It also has covered picnic tables, a boat ramp, public restrooms, a pavilion, barbecue pits, a tennis court, basketball court, and even a swimming pool.
Anglers can try their luck at catching largemouth bass, channel catfish, and crappie – guides are available across the Highland Lakes area, including Jay Fish Bird Fishing Guide Service, and Lee Benton. Want to take your own path through the lake? Boat and jet ski rentals are available as well through Bay Marine Sports Center, or you can rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from Just Yakin’ Kayak Rentals, which services Lake Marble Falls and surrounding lakes.

Inks Lake State Park
Near Inks Lake, about 30 minutes north of Marble Falls, you’ll find Inks Lake State Park, a Hill Country treasure full of water and land activities for the whole family. Swim, water ski, go boating, or even scuba dive here. There’s even a large no-wake zone for paddling, and you can rent canoes, paddle boats, and kayaks from the park store. Two fishing piers are available, as well as a boat ramp and fish cleaning stations for your catch, which will likely include such popular species as sunfish, catfish and bass.
For a truly magical slice of nature, head to the Devil's Waterhole, where rock formations dot the water, creating a beautiful swimming spot. You can access Devil’s Waterhole by hiking or paddling. On land, camp out at nearly 200 campsites or one of the park’s 22 cabins. Many are lakeside and near hiking trails and picnic areas.
Texas Tidbit: You do not need a fishing license to fish from the shore or a pier in a Texas state park.

Lake LBJ
Also located along the Colorado River is Lake LBJ, named for former President Lyndon B. Johnson, who was born and raised in the Texas Hill Country. Lake LBJ is one of the few Texas lakes that maintains a consistent level, which means the 21-mile-long lake is popular for boating, wakeboarding, water skiing, fishing, and even sailing. If you want to learn how to wakeboard or wakesurf, Texas Wake Academy holds summer camps for kids, and private lessons for all ages. Wakes2U also offers wakeboard and wakesurf lessons, plus sunset cruises and boat rentals.
For an elevated resort stay right on Lake LBJ, check out Horseshoe Bay Resort, which has numerous dining facilities, a spa, a newly renovated golf course, three pools, a kids’ club, tennis courts, and lots of rotating activities.

Lake Buchanan
Created to bring hydroelectricity to the area and to store water for flooding issues, Lake Buchanan is full of water adventures. Vanishing Texas River Cruises, operating out of Lake Buchanan since 1981, offers scenic wilderness cruises, eagle and birding cruises, sunset cruises, and private charters across the lake where you can view migrating birds, Texas flora and fauna, and waterfalls while learning about the history and geology of the area.
Along the shoreline, Black Rock Park is a 25-acre park with cabins, campsites, showers, restrooms, kayak rentals, swimming, fishing, and even mini golf, horseshoes, and washers. On the north shore of the lake is Cedar Point Recreation Area, which sits on 310 acres and offers picnicking, grills, campsites, a boat ramp, fishing, and paddling.
Texas Tidbit: From mid-November through February, the American Bald Eagle can be spotted at Lake Buchanan. The Ultimate Eagle and Birding Cruise from Vanishing Texas River Cruises gives you the opportunity to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Lake Travis
Meander down the Colorado River toward Austin, and you’ll run into Lake Travis, a 65-mile-long lake where there’s always a party. Lots of restaurants, vacation rentals, and events are found along the shorelines of Lake Travis, but there’s still plenty of room to drift off into your own little oasis and find a quiet place to relax. Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area is one such place, where 654 acres of park are dedicated for camping, hiking, boating, and lots of outdoor recreation. Set up camp right along the shoreline of Lake Travis, and enjoy grills, picnic tables, and serenity away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Another tucked-away gem is Krause Springs, a private property listed on the National Register of Historical Sites. The Krause family allows visitors to explore the 32 springs on the property, plus lots of natural pools that flow into Lake Travis. Camping and RV spots are available, and guests can also visit the Butterfly Gardens on site, too.
With loads of waterfront activities and picnic spots to enjoy, it’s easy to pack a bag and hit the water in Marble Falls.

Texas summer have you sweating? Cool off in Marble Falls

Oregon has no dearth of mindblowing outdoor adventure, from dramatic coasts with vertigo-inducing cliffs to rushing rivers through national forests to high desert. And while the northeast corner of the state gets a lot of the love, southwest Oregon offers an away-from-it-all experience that features the many natural beauties of this state.

And the best way to do it? By car, of course. The 101 runs the length of the coast and a web of highways and country roads lead inland, connecting national parks, quirky towns, and off-the-beaten-track getaways.

Here’s our itinerary for a perfect southwest Oregon road trip.

Stop 1: Florence is an atmospheric place to begin your road trip

Book a flight into the little Eugene airport for quick access to the southwest coast – seaside Florence is only an hour and fifteen minutes down the road. Located on the traditional land of the Suislaw people, this small settlement features an atmospheric Main Street with restaurants, confectionaries, art galleries, and even an apothecary. If you’re a fan of seafood, don’t miss Novelli’s, where you can enjoy straight-from-the-ocean whole Dungeness crab and savory seafood chowder right on the dock.

If you’re feeling adventurous, head to Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area right outside of town to sandboard down spectacular dunes at the world’s first sandboarding park, Sand Master Park. Here, they’ve thought of everything – they even have a sandboard designed to work on wet sand, perfect for the inevitable Oregon rainshower.

Drive to Coos Bay: Head south from Florence on the 101 for about an hour until you reach Coos Bay. Along the way you’ll pass several recreation stop-off options including Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, Umpqua Beach, and the Horsfall Beach Camping Area.

Stop 2: Enjoy the scenic coastline around Coos Bay

Coos Bay is a small port town tucked away against its namesake body of water, and it’s an excellent place to slow down and enjoy the subtle beauties of the Oregon coast. If you’re looking for an unconventional accommodation option that puts you right in the middle of Coos Bay’s most beautiful places, book a cabin or Airstream at Bay Point Landing, a glamping getaway that strikes the perfect balance between luxury and outdoor adventure. Wake up with the rising sun to watch the shorebirds fly across the estuary, go crabbing in the nearby waters, or make smores over your own personal fire pit.

Three state parks sit within a stone’s throw of Coos Bay: Sunset Bay, Shore Acres and Cape Arago. These protected areas show off Oregon’s striking cliff sides and sea-battered rock formations; each park contains short, accessible trails that deliver big views, and you can hike all the way from Sunset Bay to Cape Arago on a continuous out-and-back.

Drive to Port Orford: Head back to the 101 and drive an hour south to arrive at Port Orford; the route veers away from the coast a bit, so this is a straight shot through rural Oregon.

Stop 3: Get out on the water near Port Orford

Port Orford is a small town on a spur of the Oregon Coast that abuts the Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve. If you’ve been yearning to get on the water, now’s your chance – book with South Coast Tours to kayak out around the cliffs and see plum- and tangerine-colored sea stars, anemones, seals, shorebirds and more. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head over to the Crazy Norwegian for crispy fish and chips, plus a decadent slice of marionberry pie.

Drive to Grants Pass: From here, head south on the 101 to enjoy all the beautiful coastal views you can handle before your journey takes you inland – stop off at the Natural Bridges Viewpoint to stretch your legs before circumnavigating the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest on your way to Grants Pass. Your drive will take you down into California right past Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, a worthy detour.

Stop 4: Grants Pass is a gateway to trips on the Rogue River

Grants Pass is an excellent access point for adventures down the Rogue River, a 200-mile waterway that offers everything from a pleasant float to an adrenaline-pumping trip through some of the state’s best rapids. Book with Orange Torpedo Trips for single and multi-day trips; We recommend an outing in one of the inflatable kayaks – it's perfect for beginners looking to try out whitewater kayaking.

For a place to rest your head after your epic paddle, head to the Weasku Inn, a historic lodge built in 1924 that played host to many of Hollywood’s Golden Era elite: Clark Gable and Bing Crosby were repeat visitors.

Drive to Crater Lake National Park: Head east from Grants Pass for 2.5 hours to reach one of Oregon’s treasures: Crater Lake National Park. The route follows OR-62 as it winds up the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains.

Stop 5: Crater Lake National Park is full of fantastic outdoor activities

The park ’s defining feature is the country’s deepest lake (almost 2000ft deep!), a crystalline body of water inside a volcanic caldera. Admire the view on the Scenic Rim Drive, walk through the historic Rim Village, hike some of the park’s 90 miles of trail, catch a boat out to Wizard’s Island, or take a dip in the lake’s blue waters via the Cleetwood Cove Trail – but be warned, the hike down to the shore is not for the faint of heart.

Drive back to Eugene: The home stretch! Take the 2.5-hour drive back to Eugene. If your bones are aching from all that time in the car, stop off at Umpqua Hot Springs for a relaxing soak.

Stop 6: Hit the nightlife in Eugene

Spend some time in this eccentric university town and you’re bound to find some local treasures. Bike along the Willamette River, grab a brew in the Whiteaker neighborhood, or stop in at Oregon Wine LAB to taste some of the region’s renowned pinot noirs (or a few crisp whites) and stuff your face with amazing eats from Da Nang Vietnamese Eatery. Nightlife also offers some unique twists and turns – hit the Big Dirty to have your rockstar karaoke moment on their atmospheric stage, shoot some pool at Luckey’s Club (one of Oregon’s oldest bars), or catch a show at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts.

Indianapolis might be best known for its racetrack and stadium, but the Indiana state capital also has two state parks and hundreds of green spaces. Whether bundled up in winter coats or baring sun-kissed shoulders in the long-awaited heat of summer, residents and visitors with kids swarm to the 130 playgrounds scattered around the city and county parks.

Let the kids loose in White River State Park

Dubbed "Indy's urban escape," White River State Park packs an amphitheater, the Indianapolis Zoo, NCAA Hall of Champions, Victory Field and more into 250 green acres. As if that isn't enough, the city's Central Canal and White River slice through the park too. In summer, grab a bite from local food vendors, rent a kayak or take a Segway tour. Families flock to the children's maze and free concerts on the lawn.

Even stormy weather can't dampen a day at White River State Park: just pop into the IMAX theater, Indiana State Museum or Eiteljorg Museum.

Spend time reflecting at Martin Luther King Jr. Park's Landmark for Peace Memorial

In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Later that day, more than 450 miles north in Indianapolis, Robert F. Kennedy memorialized MLK in a speech calling for justice and peace. The Landmark for Peace Memorial stands in that spot. It depicts King and Kennedy reaching out to one another. This moving memorial piece and surrounding green space are downtown Indy's best park for respite and quiet contemplation.

Pack a picnic and see the skyline from Highland Park

It would be easy to blink and miss small Highland Park east of downtown Indy, but this city park offers some of the best picnic views of the Indy’s skyline. Hoosiers also know it as one of the best vantage points for Fourth of July fireworks. Pack a picnic or pick up a pizza pie from King Dough a few blocks up Highland Avenue and enjoy an afternoon in the sun.

Smell the flowers at Garfield Park

The oldest park in Indianapolis is also one of its lushest. You'll find families, photographers and hand-in-hand couples strolling through the free picnic area and walking trails in fair weather. The Sunken Garden and colorful, fragrant herbs and plants inside Blake's Garden beckon visitors to literally stop and smell the flowers. On a rainy day – or any day when you're pining for a glimpse of tropical foliage – spend $3 to explore the Garfield Park Conservatory. On snowy winter days, join the crowds zooming down the Garfield Park sledding hill.

Take the dog for a long walk at Eagle Creek Park

Eagle Creek Park sits on the northwestern edge of Indianapolis. With 3900 acres of nature and 1300 acres of reservoir, Eagle Creek is one of the largest municipal parks in the country. It acts more as a community hub than a humble city park. With 16 miles of walking trails, a dog park, a golf course, exercise stations and several playgrounds, no one's likely to get bored. It is also home to the Peace Learning Center, an educational facility dedicated to promoting peace-building and equity in the area.

Have a splashing good time at Holliday Park

Holliday Park might not be the oldest or biggest Indy green space, but it's undoubtedly a Hoosier favorite. With walking trails, wildflower gardens and a massive indoor nature center full of books, interactive exhibits, and hands-on learning activities for kids, what's not to love? Don't miss the city park's true star: The Ruins, an artistic facade of New York City’s former St. Paul Building. Part building ruins, part sculpture park, it includes a contemplative space, summer concert venue and children’s water table, making it the focal point of Holliday Park gatherings.

Embark on a mini adventure in Broad Ripple Park

Though it’s a 20-minute drive north of downtown, Broad Ripple Park stays busy, thanks to its plethora of family-friendly amenities. You'll find families picnicking on the hillside, couples bantering over a friendly tennis match, parents pushing strollers along the paved trails that weave past outdoor fitness stations and even a boat ramp for paddling into the White River. An outdoor swimming pool, playground, picnic shelters and one of Indy’s most popular dog parks complete the package.

Pack the tent and plan a hike at Fort Harrison State Park

Fort Harrison State Park is in Lawrence, about 13 miles from downtown Indy, and its location is what makes it a perfect retreat from traffic and city crowds. This landscape offers equal parts military history and untouched nature. Formerly known as Fort Benjamin Harrison, the campus once housed an army training facility and a WWII prisoner of war camp. Now it's the site of the Museum of 20th Century Warfare and several yearly WWII reenactments. The park’s vast array of lodging – from primitive camping to full RV hookups – and its easy access to trails through woodlands, ravines, and fishing spots along Fall Creek, make it a haven for visitors who love hiking and camping.

Get some exercise on the Monon Rail Trail

Ask most Indy residents where they walk their dogs, run on the weekends or cycle to work, and you'll quickly understand the importance of the Monon Trail. Decades ago, this 26-mile former railway corridor began a long transformation into the paved urban greenway of today. You can walk, bike or even cross-country ski between hubs like downtown Indy and the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds or take it easy on a shorter route like Broad Ripple Village to Broad Ripple Park.

Spend some me-time in Holcomb Gardens

This 20-acre flower-festooned hillside sits on the campus of Butler University, but Holcomb Gardens is free and open to the public. Wander through thousands of native trees and flowers, stroll the length of the hedges, stop by the garden house or rest on one of the stone benches in the so-called "poets' corner," where the benches feature quotes by famous poets. With a canal, gazebo and small waterfall area, it's no wonder Holcomb Gardens has become a beloved local spot for senior photos and proposals.

Bastrop and Buescher State Parks
Bastrop County is home to two incredible pine tree-filled state parks. The county’s namesake, Bastrop State Park has 7,400 acres of biking, swimming, hiking, birding, fishing and geocaching – more than enough activities to keep your nature-loving family entertained for days. Campers can pitch a tent in one of 78 single-family campsites, or if you prefer a mattress to a sleeping pad, the park also rents historic cabins built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, also known as the CCC.
Cyclists rave about the scenic 12-mile winding road between Bastrop State Park and Buescher State Park, a sister park near Smithville also built by the CCC in the 1930s. The tree-lined road is a great way to soak up the beauty of the Hill Country while getting in a dose of exercise. Buescher also reserves historic cabins and campgrounds, and you can see the stones hand-hewn by the CCC that support bridges and buildings.
Texas Tidbit: When it comes time to find a place to lay your head, Bastrop has charming historical bed-and-breakfasts for fans of Victorian architecture – including the Pecan Street Inn Bed and Breakfast, and Katy House Bed and Breakfast. You can also check out the unique lodging options.

The Colorado River, Lake Bastrop and its two parks
If you prefer to be on the water, Bastrop County has two official Texas Paddling Trails along the Colorado River. Beginner paddlers gravitate toward El Camino Real Paddling Trail. Kayak trips along this slow-moving, six-mile portion of the river trail generally take between two to three hours to complete. To turn the outing into a full day excursion, pack a picnic in a waterproof bag and stop at designated city and county parks along the banks of the river to eat and appreciate the scenery.
The vegetation along the Colorado River supports a diversity of wildlife. Birders will have a field day keeping their eyes peeled for Crested Caracaras, Ospreys, Red-shouldered Hawks, kingfishers, vultures, woodpeckers, Great Blue Herons, Wood Ducks, and Killdeer.
The Wilbarger Long Paddle Trail is a popular longer trail if you have the endurance to paddle for six to eight hours. Like El Camino Real, this section of the river is also slow-moving with plenty of sandbanks to easily pull over to rest. If you want to paddle either trail, consider joining a guided tour or renting kayaks for a self-guided tour.
If you prefer lake fun, the 906-acre Lake Bastrop has a wide variety of watercraft available at North Shore Park, including one-person, round fishing boats for recreational fishing. The lake is stocked with Florida largemouth bass, channel, blue, and flathead catfish. Because this is a cooling lake for LCRA, the water is mild year-round.
North Shore Park also has several glamping options including large tents and Airstreams for a fully immersive trip. Wooded hiking trails connect the North Shore Park and the South Shore Park, which has a mini-golf course, volleyball nets, and a pavilion.

Back in time and up in the air
If you have a kiddo going through a dinosaur phase, stop by Dinosaur Park to get a glimpse of what Texas was like when dinosaurs ruled the earth. Unlike most museums that display dinosaur skeletons, this family-run park created life-sized realistic replicas of the extinct reptiles and placed them along a nature trail. Grab a scavenger hunt list before starting the mile-long loop to see if you can spot all 30 species of dinosaur. The 2-foot long Compsognathus might be hard to see, but at 123 feet, Diplodocus – the longest dinosaur to have ever lived – is almost impossible to miss.
If you have an adventurous family, spend at least one afternoon ziplining over McKinney Roughs Nature Park. Zip Lost Pines offers six tandem lines with some of the best views in the county. Side-by-side lines foster friendly competitions to see who can get down the line the fastest. The Valley Vista line takes riders across a steep canyon, but the highlight of the tour is the River Run line. The quarter-mile line will have you soaring over trees toward the Colorado River at up to 40 miles per hour.

For a one-stop-shop for activities and accommodations, the crown jewel of the area is the Hyatt Lost Pines Spa and Resort, a great peace offering for those family members wary of spending a week in nature. The expansive property abuts the 1,100-acre McKinney Roughs Nature Park, offering a wide range of outdoor activities set among the pines.
You could spend days at the resort, strolling through butterfly gardens, watching longhorns in their pastures, riding horseback through the Texas Hill Country, fishing the Colorado River, or simply relaxing in a chair under a tree canopy with a good book. For golfers, the resort also has an 18-hole championship golf course with scenic views of the rolling hills of the Texas landscape.
For kids, the “Crooked River” waterpark with its pools, slides, lazy river and sandy beach is a perfect draw on even the hottest Texas day. And if you want to truly unwind on your vacation, the resort’s Spa Django offers the opportunity to relax and renew the mind, body and spirit. You can easily spend an entire day hopping between steam rooms, sauna and the heated pool in between rejuvenating massage and facial treatments. Those statuesque Lost Pines can be seen through the spa’s windows – a reminder that even the trees will travel for this one-of-a-kind destination.

Enjoy a bit of serenity by Liverpool Cathedral in St James’ Mount and Gardens

Liverpool Cathedral delights with its Gothic revival architecture, vaulted ceiling and spectacular views over Merseyside from the tower. Whether a visitor or local, on a clear day it is well worth scaling the many stairs to the top to see the cityscape sprawl below you.

You’ll also notice a park seemingly tucked beneath the church. Previously a stone quarry and the cathedral cemetery (with 57,839 recorded burials when it was closed), this hidden gem is St James’ Mount and Gardens – a welcome green space in a busy city.

Exploring the garden, you should look out for Tracey Emin’s Roman Standard, a statue of a 4-inch bird on a tall pole outside the Oratory. Commissioned in 2004, it’s so popular that it’s been stolen – then returned – twice.

Chill out at Chavasse Park, atop Liverpool ONE’s parking garage

If you’re in the city for shopping rather than sightseeing, you can relax after a spree at the sprawling Liverpool ONE complex at the lovely green space atop its multistory car park. The current development was built on the city a grassy space toward the Dock Road that once displayed a Yellow Submarine created for the Garden Festival of 1984 (the vessel can be seen today Liverpool John Lennon Airport). When the shopping complex was constructed in 2004, the park simply rose a few stories.

Always busy, Chavasse Park offers a program of events and activities throughout the year, from culinary festivals to a Christmas market, with plenty of food and drink options if bringing a picnic is not your kind of thing.

Sidestep the pubs and bars for a bit of peace in Roscoe Gardens

Amid the raucous bars and restaurants along Mount Pleasant in the Knowledge Quarter, find some solace in this quiet park set back from the street. Formerly a graveyard for the Renshaw Street Chapel, Roscoe Gardens is named for a chapel parishioner who campaigned against the slave trade.

Enjoy the fine Georgian architecture surrounding Falkner Square Gardens

Anyone who loves historic architecture should head up the hill to enjoy well-tended order of Falkner Square Gardens, in the heart of Liverpool’s historic Georgian Quarter. Among the park’s cobbled paths, seek out a period beach and enjoy a picnic, as well as a bit of history, as you admire the rows and rows of charming row houses.

Enjoy a lakeside walk in splendid Princes Park

Fancy escaping the city and venturing a little further? Head up the hill to Princes Park.

Opened in 1842 to commemorate the birth of Edward, Prince of Wales, this green space was designed around a large serpentine lake and circular carriage drive, and set a high new bar for Victorian landscape design. (Princes Park inspired Joseph Paxton’s plan for Birkenhead Park across the Mersey – which in turn inspired Frederick Law Olmsted’s world-famous work at New York’s Central Park.)

There are delights after every turn of Princes Park’s winding paths, from tree-lined avenues to the grave of Judy, a donkey who gave rides to children in the park for over 20 years. And needless to say, you’ll find plenty of space to sit, relax or enjoy a picnic for a while.

National parks have long been known as “America’s best idea.”
And while some observers question who really coined the phrase—1972 Pulitzer-winner Wallace Stegner or Edwardian-era diplomat Viscount James Bryce—few take issue with the underlying sentiment. In fact, many wonder why we’re not frantically expanding on our best idea, with The Sierra Club, Earth Island Institute and others calling for more national parklands ASAP.
If Congress were to heed that call, experts say, we could offset everything from the record overcrowding that plagues our most iconic national parks to the biodiversity loss that threatens all manner of habitat. A recent study published in Nature goes so far as to suggest that we could cut land animals’ risk of extinction in half by protecting the world’s remaining wilderness areas.
Lofty goals aside, our continued post-lockdown cravings for wide-open spaces make a new national park especially easy to root for right now. It would be the 64th such designation since Yellowstone kicked off the movement 150 years ago. And while no one can be sure which wilderness area congress will crown next, here are nine worthy contenders.

Overcrowding and biodiversity loss aren’t the only problems that increased parklands might address. If you take potential carbon sequestration benefits into account, as many studies do, new national parks in forested areas could help offset climate change. One prime candidate? The planet’s largest intact temperate rainforest, which also happens to be the country’s largest national forest.
At approximately 26,000 square miles, if the Tongass National Forest were a European nation, it would fall right between Lithuania and Ireland, size-wise. And if this vast confluence of old-growth forests, mountainous archipelagos and Misty Fjords were a national park, the Biden administration’s current efforts to curtail local logging would be strengthened, as would protections for Alaska Native heritage (“Tongass” is actually the name of a local Tlinghit group). That heritage runs deep here, and lives on in everyone from revered storytellers to the next-gen canoe carvers. Klamath-Siskiyou Forests ecoregion, Oregon and California
Eco-activists and regional tribes have been looking at environmental stewardship initiatives in these ancient forests for ages. One proposal is an Ancient Forest National Park that would run 230 miles from Oregon’s Rogue River to California’s Eel River through one of the world’s most biologically rich temperate coniferous forests. The park in question would protect the legendary biodiversity of the Klamath-Siskiyou Forests ecoregion, home to cougars, bears and one very special weasel, for starters. The waterways are at least as notable, as there are more federally-recognized Wild and Scenic Rivers and waterways here than anywhere else in the continental US.
Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the boating and rafting are epic here. But with four mountain ranges running through the area, so is the hiking and mountain biking. Exploring the vast wilderness, you’ll see why advocates want to upgrade it to a national park, but whatever happens with those efforts, the area has already made the World Wild Life Fund’s Global 200 list of “the most outstanding and representative habitats for biodiversity on this planet” for purposes of conservation.

Taking its name from the ancient Opata word for “wild turkey,” the Chiricahua National Monument is still home to the Gould’s Turkey—a formerly at-risk subspecies turned conservation success story. Key to the comeback: a local hunting ban, plus the sheer isolation of the birds’ mountain aeries mid-desert (“sky islands,” in the parlance of these US-Mexico borderlands). Still, for all the fascinating wildlife—which also includes javelina and coatimundi—the geologic formations are the real, well…rock stars.
Born of volcanism, sculpted by the elements and starkly arrayed along the park’s 17 miles of hiking trails, these super-sized rhyolite pillars look like the handiwork of some cairn-obsessed deity—though the reigning Chiricahua Apache god, Usen, is better known for giving rise to the entire universe. Because this landscape remains sacred, one of the congressional bills proposing its re-designation as a national park advises the Secretary of the Interior “in consultation with Indian Tribes, to ensure the protection of, and access to, traditional cultural and religious sites.” Separately, a senate bill to make this land a national park passed unanimously at the end of March. To toast to the good news after you’ve explored the area, visit a neighboring Wilcox winery. Yes, there’s an actual wine region in the Arizona desert—and even more surprising to the uninitiated, numerous varietals have won national awards.

Kayaking in Island Park Wildlife Sanctuary, Michigan

If the Sierra Club’s proposed North Woods National Park came to pass, the resulting park would be the Midwest’s largest. Made up of vast, carbon-dense tracts such as the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest—plus glacial lakes, wild rivers and wetlands—the total acreage would be three million.
There you may spot not only imperiled species—harbor wolves, lynx and osprey, for starters—but also fellow humans: paddlers, hikers, mountain bikers, anglers and in winter, cross-country skiers. And while snowmobile use in national parks is constantly being reviewed, the current iteration of the Northwoods is such a beloved snowmobiling destination there’s even a Snowmobiling Hall of Fame and Museum in the town of St. Germain, Michigan.

Though Maine is home to at least a couple of potential new national parks, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument was recently called out by the chair of the senate subcommittee on National Parks—none other than Maine’s own Angus King—as a likely candidate. The state’s tallest mountain, the nearly mile-high Mount Katahdin, serves as a backdrop to these 87,000 wooded acres, where multiple rivers and streams interlace a landscape of forests and wetlands.
As befits a place with the word “Waters” in its name, the kayaking and canoeing ops are plentiful and beautiful here, but the hiking and mountain biking trails are epic, too. Or simply stock up on homemade blueberry and whoopie pies at Katahdin General Store and drive along the monument’s 17-mile scenic loop, where you’ll find plenty of scenic overlooks. Sightings that may include moose, lynx, black bears or other famed residents.

Despite its name, the Delaware Water Gap straddles New Jersey and Pennsylvania and stands to become the first national park in both states. At around 67,000 acres, the current National Recreation Area is home to 150 miles of leafy Pocono Mountain trails, a 40-mile stretch of the Delaware River and a whole series of waterfalls. Don’t miss Raymondskill Falls, whose three-tiered drop almost adds up to the height of Niagara —or Dingmans Falls, where you’ll hike along a boardwalk to the lower section, then do a more rugged climb for views of the upper falls.
Among those advocating for national park status here, it’s not just about preserving bucolic beauty. Some see this as a social justice issue, too, given how few national parks are withing easy reach of millions of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York City dwellers. The access provided by a new Delaware Water Gap National Park would start to turn those tides.

While the American West is far more endowed with national parks than the east, there’s one state in the region that comes up short: Idaho. Granted, Yellowstone spills over the border from Wyoming, so if you’re going to lay claim to only some of a national park, a sliver of the granddaddy of them all isn’t bad. But among those who believe Idaho should have its own national park, Craters of the Moon is a top contender, especially if the footprint were expanded to include the neighboring sagebrush steppe—home to the at-risk sage grouse and rich, carbon-storing soil.
But the centerpiece of the park would be the namesake lunar landscapes, all formed by ancient volcanic activity. You’ll find views for days, especially atop the Inferno Cone, where you’ll see the Great Rift, the Snake River Plain, the Pioneer Mountains and if you’re lucky, the Tetons. One rival panorama? The view you’ll get of the legendary local night sky from the Lava Flow Campground.

Georgia is another state that doesn’t yet have its own national park, but once the National Park Service wraps up a special resource study of the Ocmulgee River Corridor between Macon and Hawkinsville, things may change. The potential park has been a longtime goal of local conservationists and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, whose displaced ancestors once called these lands home. Actually, there are thousands of years’ worth of Indigenous history in the area, as you’ll find at the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park —once the scene of the largest archeological dig in the US You’ll want to wander the entire site, but at a minimum, see The Great Temple Mound Complex, the most imposing remnants of the Mississippians who lived here in the 10th century.
The prospective national park would fuse the archeological park and riverside stretch into a new mega-park that could run for almost 60 miles through 70,000 or so acres of environmentally and culturally significant lands—all within easy reach of downtown Macon. Needless to say, you won’t want for amazing refueling stops in town, but two of the most iconic are Fish n’ Pig and the Bear’s Den.

Yes, the US already has a Big Bend National Park in Texas. But advocates of a Floridian counterpart along the state’s panhandle say we need to protect the longest stretch of undeveloped (and barely developed) coastline in the lower 48. If a proposed 1.9 million-acre Florida Big Bend National Park comes to pass, it will also include forests, wetlands, rivers, springs, estuaries and a major swath of seagrass—an essential habitat, erosion mitigator, food source and “blue carbon” storehouse. Among the region’s most famous and imperiled residents are manatees, but you may also encounter leopard frogs, grey wolves and all manner of bird in your explorations by boat, bike or foot.
Indeed, the area’s 83,000-acre St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge was designated an avian habitat almost a century ago and has since been home to not only bald eagles, osprey, woodpeckers and huge numbers of seabirds—but also alligators, deer and monarch butterflies. If these last winged are your thing, visit in October, when monarchs, Viceroy, Queen, American Painted Beauty and Gulf Fritillary butterflies will set your heart aflutter.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

While people outside the Midwest may not know about this Wisconsin treasure, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a must-see. Visitors to the Apostle Islands can indulge in the beauty of the 21 islands (think beaches, trails and sandstone cliffs) throughout Lake Superior.

The Apostle Islands offer just as much adventure in the summer as in winter. Summer tourists can hike the trails, bike, kayak or take a cruise through caves in Lake Superior. In the winter, the water freezes and transforms the Apostle Islands into a haven for ice cave adventurists. Snowmobiling, skiing and other winter activities are also available in the Northwoods.

To top off the activities, bird watchers also find something to love about the Apostle Islands. With more than 300 bird species, the Apostle Islands has one of the busiest migrations in the Great Lakes. Pack your binoculars to see which eagles, owls and sparrows you can find amongst other wildlife.

Visiting Apostle Islands National Lakeshore: To visit the Apostle Islands, travelers opt to stay in Bayfield, Wisconsin. A 25-minute ferry from Bayfield to La Pointe takes visitors to Madeline Island, the largest Apostle Island (though it's not part of the National Lakeshore), for a $17 roundtrip. Bring your bike on the Madeline Island ferry for as little as $7, and your car onboard beginning at $30.

The Bayfield and Little Sand Bay Visitors Center and Meyers Beach are accessible by road; however, access to the 21 islands is by boat only. To camp on the mainland, visitors have to hike the 6-mile Lakeshore Trail starting at Meyers Beach or travel via kayak – cars, tents and RV camping are not options. Campers should be prepared to pay $15 for an individual site, $30 for a group site and a $10 camping reservation fee. Ice cave events are free for children 5 and under and $5 for ages 16 and up.

Lake Geneva Shore Path

Hikers looking for a low-maintenance trail with a lake view should check out the Lake Geneva Shore Path. Located about an hour south of Milwaukee, Lake Geneva sits on the land of the Potowatomi people.

The resort town is full of beautiful mansions and summer homes originally built by Illinois residents who fled after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Take the Lake Geneva Shore Path to "ooh" and "aah" over said mansions on one side and sparkling blue Lake Geneva on the other.

Lake Geneva's shore is roughly 21 miles long, with the path amassing 26 miles. The paved path takes 8 to 10 hours to complete; and some sections are filled with more gravel, wood, hills, rocks and grass than other areas. Wisconsin is known for harsh winters, making walking the path challenging after early November (unless you prefer hiking in snow).

Visiting the Lake Geneva Shore Path: One of the best things about Lake Geneva Shore Path? It's free and open to the public. Visitors have a few options for lodging in neighboring Wisconsin cities if they choose not to stay in Lake Geneva. Madison is just over an hour northwest of Lake Geneva, while Milwaukee and Kenosha are under an hour northeast of the town. Most visitors go to Lake Geneva on a day trip; however, resorts are available in the summer for longer visits to extend your stay. Lake Geneva is popular during the summer months and resorts fill up fast, so if you want to extend your stay, book your trip no later than March or April.  Renting a car will be necessary – there is no public transportation nearby – but there is street parking and a parking area near Library Park in downtown Lake Geneva. Access points to the shore path include Williams Bay, Fontana and Big Foot Beach State Park.

Ice Age National Scenic Trail

History and nature combine to create a one-of-a-kind experience on the 1200-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail. More than 2 million visitors every year retrace the steps of the mammoths, saber-tooth tigers and glaciers that cascaded the land.

To hike the entire Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin takes 8 to 12 weeks. But with several smaller hikes to choose from – for day trips or overnight stays – visitors and locals often pick one segment to hike. The trail offers hiking, biking and bird watching in the summer and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

Interstate State Park is the oldest Wisconsin state park on the Ice Age Trail and bridges the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. The most notable part of the park is the Dalles of the St. Croix,  a steep gorge amidst the 1400 acres. There are nine miles of summer trails and 12.5 miles of winter trails, including the Silverbrook Trail for beginner hikers, which showcases the 18-foot Silverbrook Falls. In addition to hiking and camping, the Ice Age Interpretive Center is an extra opportunity at Interstate to learn about Wisconsin's history with glaciers through a 20-minute film, murals and photographs.

Visiting Ice Age National Scenic Trail: There are multiple places to begin the Ice Age Trail. Devil's Lake State Park is a popular segment in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Other cities and parks where hikers can access the Ice Age Trail include Dells of the Eau Claire Park, Gibraltar Rock (near Madison), Kettle Moraine State Forest (accessible via car for a day trip from Milwaukee) and Interstate State Park at Saint Croix Falls. Any state parks on the trail are part of the Wisconsin State Park System which requires a vehicle admission sticker for all visitors. Out-of-state vehicles have to pay $11 daily (except Devil's Lake which is $16).

Devil's Lake State Park

Devil's Lake State Park is Wisconsin's most popular state park for summer adventures and fall foliage. Known for its 500-foot quartzite bluffs and rocks, Devil's Lake attracts 3 million visitors per year who want to hike, climb and take iconic photos with the 360-acre lake in the background. Most visitors try to find the "Devil's Doorway" for a photo-op, but be careful – these rocks were formed after the glacier period in Wisconsin more than 15,000 years ago.

Present-day Devil's Lake belongs to the Ho-Chunk Nation who have inhabited the land for 300,000 years. The lake is also a part of The Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which makes up 1200 miles of the park, including 29 miles of hiking trails. For non-hikers, there are picnic areas, two sandy beaches and concessions that offer activities such as paddle boating, canoeing, and kayaking.

Campers love Devil's Lake, too. Three campgrounds (Quartzite, Northern Lights, and Ice Age) totaling 423 sites across the park and nine group campsites are available for a maximum of 240 campers. Quartzite is the only winter campground, and some amenities, including flushable toilets and showers, may not be available. Visitors should also plan at least a month or two in advance – camping is no longer offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Visiting Devil's Lake State Park: Devil's Lake is located in Baraboo, Wisconsin, almost two hours from Milwaukee and under one hour from Madison. For non-campers, most visitors and locals opt to make Devil's Lake a day trip from Milwaukee or Madison. Winter until Memorial Day is considered the early season, so campers and hikers should plan to visit in the summer and fall months, starting as early as June. In the summer, camping without electricity is $25 and $40 with electricity on weekdays. On weekends in the summer, campers pay $27 without electricity and $42 with electricity. Group rates start at $40 per night for 1-20 people. For day-trippers, a day pass is $16 for non-residents.

North Country National Scenic Trail

Stretching for 4600 miles, from New York to North Dakota, the North Country National Scenic Trail is ideal for campers and hikers wanting to explore northwestern Wisconsin. With waterfalls, lakes and streams surrounded by forestry, adventurers have 220 miles of wildlife to enjoy.

Copper Falls State Park is a beloved North Country Scenic Trail stop. Two highlights on the trail are the Copper and Brownstone waterfalls. Visitors can swim, bike and fish in Loon Lake or hike along Bad River on Doughboy's Nature Trail for 1.7 miles.

Though summer is the busiest for the North Country National Scenic Trail, the Marengo River segment in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest provides multi-season activities, including snowshoe hiking during the winter. In general, hiking this segment can be difficult for beginners, but experienced visitors can observe three overlooks of the Marengo River Valley, the most scenic path in the forest.

Visiting North Country National Scenic Trail: Like the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, the North Country Scenic Trail has multiple entry points. The trail passes through Bayfield, Ashland, Iron and Douglas counties. Using the state parks and forests is the easiest way to navigate the North Country Trail, including Copper Falls State Park, Pattison State Park, Brule River State Forest and Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. All state parks require vehicle admission for $11 daily, and most are open year-round, 24 hours a day. However, check with the respective state park for any changes, and hunting and fishing licenses are required. Campers can make their reservations online.

Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway

Travelers can tube the summer days away on the Saint Croix or Namekagon rivers in the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway. Bridging Minnesota and Wisconsin, the riverway runs through eight Wisconsin counties including Bayfield, Saint Croix, Douglas, Washburn, Burnett, Sawyer, Pierce and Polk. Forest and parks are sprinkled throughout the 252-mile route for campers and hikers to find the best trails for their adventures.

Governor Knowles State Forest is 55 miles and 32,500 acres of outdoor excitement for visitors to hike, bike, horseback ride, hunt, canoe and paddle. The forest has three main campgrounds for avid campers: St. Croix, Trade River Equestrian and Sioux Portage Group. With summer as the best time to visit, travelers opt for the woody views of the Sandrock Cliffs trail for an easy hike along the river.

Visiting Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway: The riverway itself is free; however, there can be associated parking and admission fees on state and county land within Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway. All state parks require $11 daily vehicle admission. Visitors who want to visit the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Ice Age Trail can camp at Interstate State Park and then head to Governor Knowles State Forest in Grantsburg. The park and forest are only 40-minutes apart via car. For camping reservations, head to the Wisconsin State Parks Reservation System.

Deschutes River Trail

The Deschutes River Trail is a can’t-miss Bend experience. Divided into two reaches, the Old Mill District stretch (from Riverbend Park to Miller’s Landing Park) is an urban paved footpath that follows the Deschutes River through a shopping and cosmopolitan center where you can easily grab a cup of joe or sweet treat while exploring.

An extension or alternate reach, the South Canyon arm traverses the Deschutes River from Farewell Bend Park to Riverbend Park. This outstanding trail, in such close proximity to town, showcases the best riparian nature experiences the Deschutes has to offer. Bird-watching, springtime wildflower identification, serene riverscapes and powerful rapids are all viewable on foot or bike. Hikers, runners, anglers, families and picnicking pairs, all enjoy river access on this delightful stretch, which terminates with a loop back over a pedestrian bridge.

Shevlin Park

Below a stately lineup of ponderosa pines, the icy snow meltwaters of Tumalo Creek flow through Shevlin Park. Nearing the base of Three Sisters Wilderness, but still a stone's throw from town, this park has it all. From an extensive network of single-track mountain bike trails to miles of hiking and running paths for solo sojourns or family treks and tons of space for dog walks, the park offers plenty of adventure.

A rentable venue for special occasions, Aspen Hall is located at the north end entrance to the park. Teepees, a small fishing pond and Aspen Meadow Picnic Shelter are additional attractions.

Drake Park

Take a morning stroll through Drake Park and enjoy its flowy footpath along the iconic Mirror Pond. Arguably the Venice Beach of Central Oregon, by day the park provides bird-watching, biking, picnicking and river access. Popular local events like Munch & Music (recurring weekly in the summer) are also hosted here.

Or, head to Drake Park after a dinner date downtown. In the evening, the park is serene and tranquil. Stretch your legs with a walk, and stop to peer into the waters of the Deschutes.  At its south end, looking upriver from The Commons, a view of the Cascade mountains showcases heavenly alpenglow, and at twilight, offers an excellent sherbert sunset. At dusk, head over the footbridge and walk out to the center for a view of the river on all sides.

Westside honorable mention: Columbia Park is a small but mighty park on the west bank of the Deschutes River near the aforementioned Drake Park footbridge. Locals call it the pirate park – it has a unique play structure fashioned in the form of a pirate ship.

Larkspur Trail & Pilot Butte Nature Trail

On its south end, Larkspur Trail starts near Ponderosa Park and connects Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint and adjoining nature trails on its north end. This charming neighborhood trail is partially paved, but some sections consist of pavers, gravel and dirt. On your way, you'll cross pedestrian bridges, traverse pine forest, dry desert, backyards and an urban underpass. Take a hiking trail to the top of Pilot Butte (which is a cinder cone volcano) or drive your car or truck up the road during warmer months (it's open Aptil 15 to November 1) .  The trail is steep, dry and lined with cinder.  And while there are many benches and trees with shade to rest under, be sure to bring water. Look down on the city lights at twilight, or, during the day, indulge in the breathtaking 360-degree view of white-capped mountains in every direction.

Eastside honorable mention: Alpenglow Park is the newest park to Bend’s roster. Enjoy walking, running and biking trails. A playground, picnic benches, splash pad, rock climbing wall, off-leash dog area and demonstration garden are slated to open in the summer of  2022.

Smith Rock State Park

Just a 45-minute drive from Bend outside Terrebonne, Smith Rock State Park is said to be the birthplace of American sport climbing. For wanderers without ropes, harnesses and other specialized gear, the park has breathtaking views of jagged welded ash tuff escarpments, columnar basalt and the meandering Crooked River. Watch climbers become the size of ants as they make upward progress on their routes of choice, or tackle a hiking trail yourself. Misery Ridge is both the the most iconic and difficult due to elevation gain.

Riley Ranch Nature Reserve

Riley Ranch Nature Reserve connects to Shevlin Park, Sage Flat Loop Trail and Canyon Loop Trail and traverses the corridor adjacent to Tumalo Creek. These trails bring terrain that looks a lot like Shevlin Park, but provide more extensive hiking opportunities. Dogs are only allowed on certain stretches. We suggest checking regulations before you arrive.
