Nearby is the South West Coast Path, which offers 630 miles of plunging headlands and wildflower meadows, or it’s a much shorter walk to the pristine beaches at Porthcurno. Other nearby attractions include the balancing boulder of Logan Rock and the Minack open-air auditorium, where the sea makes a suitably dramatic backdrop.

Best for rambling and cycling: Kettlewell, Yorkshire Dales

Great Langdale Campsite is at the head of one of these valleys with the soaring Langdale Pikes towering over the tents, which means instant access to the high ground for walkers and a ready supply of tracks and byways for mountain bikers.

The site is run by the National Trust, the organization that protects the local landscape, so your fees go to a good cause. If you don’t have your own tent, you can hire a wooden camping pod complete with heating (ideal after a winter hike or rainy bike ride), or check into a yurt or tepee.

Enjoy a secluded swim at Lazarus Beach, Lazarus Island

Eight small islands make up the “Southern Islands of Singapore,” including Lazarus Island. Due to its relative inaccessibility, Lazarus Beach is one of the nicest in Singapore. To get to the island, take a scheduled ferry from Marina South Pier to St John’s Island; Lazarus is joined to St. John’s via a 100m (328ft) paved causeway. Alternatively, go the decadent route and hire a private yacht, many of which you’ll spot anchored in the lagoon on weekends.

One of Singapore’s best-kept secrets, this beach is one you may have all to yourself on weekdays. Note there are no stores on the island, which means you need to bring your own provisions.

Zip in to lie out at Siloso Beach, Sentosa

Singapore has many beaches, but only one beachfront resort: the luxurious Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa. While anyone can access Siloso Beach, the Shangri-La has roped off the western stretch exclusively for its guests. This important historical site, where the Sook Ching Massacre of 1942 took place, is today a relatively deserted beach, made all the more mesmerizing by the black boulders strewn across the sand.  We recommend combining a visit to Punggol with a trip to Coney Island : hire a bike near Punggol Jetty to cycle 15 minutes to the 100-hectare (247-acre) national park, where bike trails and secluded beaches abound.

Bring the family to Palawan Beach, Sentosa

This calm stretch of water sits between Sentosa’s Siloso and Tanjong beaches. Kids will love Palawan, especially its access HydroDash. This floating aqua park welcomes those ages five and up; we recommend reserving in advance if you’re visiting on the weekend.

Elsewhere on Palawan, geography buffs may be intrigued by the suspension bridge which leads you to the “Southernmost point of Continental Asia,” from which two viewing towers offer endless views out toward South China Sea. For eats, head to chic FOC Sentosa, a Barcelona-inspired restaurant where you can enjoy paella and tapas overlooking the lagoon.

Catch a dazzling sunrise at Changi Beach

Changi Beach forms one of the oldest coastal developments in Singapore. With its location on the far east of the island, this is the perfect spot to catch a sunrise.

A less popular counterpart to nearby East Coast Beach, this natural beach has a shoreline that extends from Changi Point to Changi Ferry Terminal. Since it’s located just in front of Changi Airport, aviation enthusiasts will love the vantage points for plane spotting. Alternatively, those seeking a scenic stroll can head to the boardwalk at the western end of Changi Point.

Stretching over 15km (9 miles), East Coast Park hosts man-made beaches built on reclaimed land. This is an active beach, with sunseekers engaging in wakeboarding, windsurfing, cycling and other pursuits on land and the water. You’ll find many rental shops hiring out everything from tandem bikes to pedal go-karts.

Since East Coast Park is hugely popular with the locals, expect some crowded spots on weekends. If you dream of waking up and having the beach to yourself, there are camping and glamping sites here, too (luxurious Bell tents come equipped with queen beds and fans).

Many eating options dot the park, from chili crab at Jumbo Seafood to salads at PS Cafe. The best option? Local fare at East Coast Lagoon Food Village, where you can devour satay and cereal prawns, washed down with Tiger Beer.

Slow down with a day trip to Pulau Ubin

A 15-minute boat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal will bring you to the island sanctuary of Pulau Ubin, a perfect escape from the busy city. Hire a bicycle and set off at your own pace to explore the 1020-hectare (2520-acre) island and Singapore’s last remaining village. You can also explore Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems. Check out the tide table in advance so you can plan to arrive at low tide and admire the sea life.

Mamam Beach is currently the only official beach open on this island; it’s also a popular campsite with basic facilities. Ubin town is home to a handful of casual restaurants, including Season Live Seafood.

Valletta is full of architectural gems and historical wonders

Europe’s first planned city, Valletta is Unesco World Heritage listed thanks to its extremely high concentration of historic monuments. Built in the 17th century as a grid of streets on a narrow peninsula, there was never any space to sprawl messily outwards, and the architecture has remained remarkably untouched. St John’s Co-Cathedral is the fantastically gilded jewel in the crown, alongside the sumptuous Grand Master’s Palace and the treasure-packed National Museum of Archaeology. Designed by internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano, 21st-century additions to the city’s architecture (the first for hundreds of years) include a leviathan city gate, a modern parliament building, and an open-air theatre that rises phoenix-like from the ruins of the WWII-bombed Opera House. Housed in the historic 16th-century Auberge d’Italie, MUŻA opened in late 2018 as a spectacular and innovative showcase for Malta’s Museum of Fine Arts.

Cross the harbor in a water taxi to visit The Three Cities, Tarxien Temples and Hypogeum

Facing Valletta across the royal-blue Grand Harbour are the small fortified towns known as the Three Cities: Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua. Catching a traditional wooden dgħajsa water taxi is the best way to approach them. The most interesting of the three is Vittoriosa, with its maze of streets, the Inquisitor’s Palace, Malta at War Museum, and excellent traditional Maltese restaurants.

Fort St Angelo’s centuries of history include 1565’s Great Siege and almost seven decades as the naval headquarters of Britain’s Mediterranean fleet from 1912 to 1979. Near the Three Cities is Malta’s most amazing site, the ancient Hal Saflieni Hypogeum in nearby Paola (book several months ahead). These extraordinarily well-preserved subterranean caverns were carved out of the rock over 5000 years ago. Complete your prehistoric odyssey in the similarly ancient Tarxien Temples, a few blocks away.

Dine on the city walls in Mdina and descend into catacombs in Rabat

Great golden-stone walls encircle the narrow lanes and piazzas of hilltop Mdina, an Arabic-feeling citadel where majestic mansions and convents are hidden behind unassuming doors. Restaurants perched on Mdina’s city walls make for a spectacular lunch stop, and the beautiful St Paul’s Cathedral is one of Malta’s finest churches. Nearby Rabat, meaning “suburb”, is a small town just outside Mdina’s fortifications. With a much more local feel, it has an impressive excavated Roman villa, a spooky array of catacombs, and an emerging fine-dining scene courtesy of innovative restaurants including Root 81 and Townhouse No 3.

Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra have the most astounding location of all of Malta’s prehistoric temples, set atop sea cliffs, gazing out towards the islet known as Filfla (from filfel, the Arabic for peppercorn). There’s an excellent small museum to put them into context. A short bus or car ride away is Wied iż-Żurrieq, the launching point for the Blue Grotto, with regular boat trips across the dark, sparkling Mediterranean to a series of sea caves, which glow with a thousand luminescent shades of blue. Visit the grotto in the morning, and then ease into a leisurely seafood lunch at nearby Il Corsaro.

Glitz and glamor await you in Sliema and St Julian's

For a bit of Maltese glitz and buzz, head across the harbor by passenger ferry to the elegant grid of streets that make up Sliema, its uber-mall, the Point, and the bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants of St Julian’s. There are postage-stamp-sized beaches around the coast so you can dip your toes in the water, but this area is really about shopping, eating, partying, and sipping on cocktails. Paceville, a small area in St Julian’s, gets thronged with bar hoppers on summer nights.

Enjoy incredible seafood in Marsaxlokk

At Marsaxlokk, brightly painted fishing boats bob in the harbor, their reflections spilling color across the water, while the shore is a mass of stalls and hubbub. Every Sunday, the town hosts Malta’s biggest fish market, with everything on sale from baby sharks to oysters. Intensely colorful and vibrant, it’s the ideal inspiration for a feast at one of the harborfront restaurants. It’s also worth visiting the town on other days of the week when it is much more tranquil and you can see local fishermen fixing their nets in the harbor. Golden Bay is one of Malta's most popular beaches

If you’re in search of soft sand, Golden Bay is one of Malta’s peachiest options, a north-coast golden arc overlooked by one huge hotel, with multiple restaurants in case of peckishness. You can windsurf, go boating or waterski from the beach, but it’s also a great place to pick up a boat trip with Charlie’s Discover Speed Boat Trips. Options include exploring sea caves and hidden beaches, and even cruising over to Comino island.

Dingli Cliffs are the perfect spot for a clifftop walk

At Dingli Cliffs, Malta’s landmass suddenly drops 220m (722ft) into the water. This is a fabulous place for a windswept walk – a narrow road runs along the top of the cliffs. Lunch on traditional Maltese dishes such as rabbit at Diar il-Bniet, a farm-to-table restaurant in nearby Dingli village, or join one of their cookery classes to learn about Malta’s cuisine influenced by centuries of cultural interaction. After lunch, explore the mystery that is “Clapham Junction”, deep prehistoric scores that look like cart ruts in the wide sloping limestone pavement, 1.5km (a mile) inland from the cliffs.

Take a day trip to gorgeous Gozo

Malta’s neighboring island of Gozo encompasses storybook scenery, dizzying sea cliffs, and notable restaurants with stellar Mediterranean views. The island is accessible via regular car ferries from Ċirkewwa on Malta’s northern coast, or on the new fast ferries – foot passengers and bikes only – traveling from Valletta to Gozo’s Mġarr Harbour. Rent a car, e-bike or scooter at the harbor and explore Il-Kastell, the towering citadel crowning Gozo’s walled capital, Victoria, and the extraordinary coastal rock formations of Dwejra. The lovely small town of Xagħra is ideal for lunch in the main square and is also home to the gigantic-by-name-and-nature Ġgantija prehistoric temples. Gozo is also perfect for long leisurely rambles, bike rides through the back roads, and swimming from hidden coves.

Discover unspoiled beauty with a visit to Comino and the Blue Lagoon

You know those postcards that show too-blue-to-be-true water? The Blue Lagoon actually looks like that. A wide-open lagoon with a base of white sand and rock, it’s so fiercely aquamarine that the color seems to have been cranked up a few notches. It’s a fantastic place for swimming and snorkeling, and it lies alongside the picturesque, undeveloped island of Comino, which is good for a leisurely amble and pretending you’re Robinson Crusoe. There are plenty of tours here from both Malta and Gozo, and you can also go independently by taking a water taxi from either Ċirkewwa (Malta) or Mġarr (Gozo) port. During the height of summer, the Blue Lagoon does get (very!) busy. Consider visiting later in the day when day trippers are leaving. At the time of writing, the island’s only hotel was closed for redevelopment.

Getting around Malta

Car hire rates in Malta are among Europe’s lowest, and a good option to explore beyond the busy urban conurbation framing Valletta, Sliema and St Julian’s. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road, the same as in the UK and most Commonwealth countries. Malta Public Transport operates the local buses, with services all over Malta and Gozo (single-journey ticket €2/$2.10). An Explore Card (adult/child €21/15 | $22.18/15.80) offers unlimited bus travel for a seven-day period. Car ferries and passenger ferries run between Malta and Gozo, and Valletta Ferry Services link Valletta to the Three Cities and Sliema.

The beaches of Malta tend to be dramatic, rocky and sea-sculpted, with fewer soft and sandy curves of Mediterranean coastline than you might expect. Despite this, the Maltese make the most of every swimming spot, and on these compact islands, water sports abound, and you're never far from the sea.

With crystalline waters, historic wrecks, and interesting underwater formations, Malta is also Europe’s best diving destination, but even snorkeling from the island nation's coastline offers a remarkable insight into an underwater world.

Best beach for swimming

Beating many strong contenders, Comino’s Blue Lagoon snags the title of Malta's top swimming spot. Ringed by rocks and framed by gleaming white sand, Comino's limpid and sheltered inland sea glows periwinkle bright, and it's a heavenly place to swim. The only caveat is that the Blue Lagoon is definitely not a secret, so in high season you’ll be sharing the pool with a few hundred others. A better option is to skip the hordes by taking a boat trip here in the afternoon after many people have left for the day.

Golden Bay, Malta

Best beach for soft sand

Malta and Gozo don’t offer many big sandy beaches, but there are a few gems. Golden Bay, on Malta’s northwestern coast, arguably the most beautiful, is a wide curve of orange-gold sand that shelves gently into the dark-blue Mediterranean. This is a place to lie down on the island's softest sand, mull over the watersports and boat trips on offer, or peruse the menus of nearby restaurants overlooking the bay.

Mellieħa Bay

Best beach for watersports

You’re never far from a watersports provider in Malta. For variety, Mellieħa Bay is one of the best beaches for messing about on the water, with windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing, canoeing, banana boating or parasailing all on offer. This is Malta’s largest sandy beach and has a reliable northeasterly breeze that makes it ideal for wind-based water sports. Other top choices for water sports include Xlendi, Marsalforn and Golden Bay.

Wied il-Għasri

Best beach for snorkeling

Snorkelers note: Malta is underwater heaven. On the Gozo coast, Wied il-Għasr i is a coastal chasm that creates a narrow river of seawater, finishing in a tiny sand and shingle beach. You access the beach via a staircase hacked into the rock. Some of Malta’s finest snorkeling can be had by launching off into the channel, although it’s best avoided in rough weather. Other prime snorkeling spots include the rocky inlet of Mgarr ix-Xini, the natural sea pool of Għar Lapsi, and Gozo's Blue Hole. If scuba is more your thing, there are plenty of diving centers; a popular spot for diving is the Blue Hole near Gozo's Dwejra Bay.

Fomm ir-Riħ

Best beach for peace and quiet

Fomm ir-Riħ is Malta’s most remote and inaccessible beach, and its name means the ‘mouth of the wind’. It’s accessed from close to the small town of Baħrija on the northwestern Maltese coast. A steep and sometimes tricky path leads down to the beach, a walk of around 20 minutes. Such difficulty brings rewards, however, and if you’re looking for peace and quiet, gin-clear water, and magnificent coastal views, this is the beach for you. If the scramble down doesn’t appeal, you can always approach by boat.

Għajn Tuffieħa

Best beach for sunbathing

Neighbor to popular Golden Bay, and sharing the same lovely outlook and soft, silky, butterscotch-colored sand, Għajn Tuffieħa is a quieter choice for sun-worshipping. Unlike Golden Bay, it's not backed by hotels, and the slightly longer walk to get there also helps to thin out the crowds. When all you want to do is lie in the sun and occasionally cool off in the sea, this is an ideal choice. Other great suntraps include the rocks around St Peter’s Pool and the remote peace and tranquility of Fomm ir-Riħ.

Ramla Bay

Best beach for families

Easily accessible by bus and car, the terracotta-colored sands of Gozo's Ramla Bay are backed by a restaurant that hires out umbrellas and sunbeds. The beach slopes gently into the water, the views up across the hills are delightful, and there’s a scramble up to Calypso’s Cave to consider if anyone’s getting bored. Ramla Bay is one of Malta’s best family beaches, although Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay and Paradise Bay are also worthy contenders for the title.

Reached via a narrow, winding road, Gozo's Mġarr ix-Xini (Port of the Galleys) was once the island's main harbor for the Knights of St John, and the rocky bay's pebbled beach is now the location of quite possibly Malta's most laid-back beachside restaurant. Service at the ten-table Rew Rew can sometimes be a little too relaxed, but lunch plates overflowing with seafood – including excellent calamari – and salad and homemade potato chips, make the experience all worthwhile. Try to visit on a weekday for a shot at securing a spot in the adjacent car park, or charter a boat around the coast from Xlendi or Mġarr harbor.

St Peter’s Pool

Best natural swimming pool

Natural swimming pools, sea-sculpted from the coastal rock, are a scenic summer highlight in Malta. Located on the southeastern coast, St Peter’s Pool is one of the loveliest – a ladle-shaped scoop out of the rock that forms a sheltered lagoon for a swim, after which you can bask seal-like on the surrounding rocks. Nearby, and usually much quieter, is the swimming hole at Il-Kalanka Bay. Note the platform for jumping into the water at Il-Kalanka is higher than at St Peter's, so extra care should be taken.

Also worthy of special mention is Għar Lapsi, a rocky inlet that lies at the base of Malta's Dingli Cliffs. It's popular with snorkelers, divers, and especially children who like leaping into the sea from the rocks. Offering brilliant views of Għar Lapsi's rocky cove, Carmen's Bar & Restaurant is another top spot for a relaxed meal.

Jalousie (aka Sugar Beach)

Best  for epic views of the twin peaks

Did you even go to St. Lucia if you didn’t spend at least one afternoon baking in the sun while admiring the views of the stunning twin peaks? This beach is THE place to make that happen. Nestled right in the middle of the two mountainous landmarks, Jalousie Beach looks and feels incredibly green – but it’s also known for its powdery white sand and its quintessential Caribbean blue waters.

Half of the beach is owned by the luxury hotel Sugar Beach Resort (hence its nickname Sugar Beach), but fortunately, you don’t need to be a guest to enter. There is also a portion of the beach that’s accessible to the public. Aside from the epic views, the beach is also a favorite among snorkelers and scuba divers, who are lured in by the 1800ft dropoff at the base of the Pitons.

Grand Anse beach

Best for turtle spotting

Yes, yes, most people head to the beach for its saltwater and its sand. But this east-side beach also has turtles! Lots of turtles! And not just any turtles, either – these are endangered leatherback turtles, aka the largest of all sea turtles. During the nesting season (which goes from March until August), travelers come to watch them crawl out of the water and lay their eggs.

Not a turtle lover? Not a problem. Grand Anse is also a stunning beach in and of itself, especially if you’re into that off-the-beaten-path vibe. Due to its location on the eastern side of the island, Grand Anse is decidedly more wild and remote than its west-side cousins, with a long stretch of unspoiled sand (one and a quarter miles) that’s perfect for a peaceful solo stroll on the beach. Not surprisingly, though, the secluded beach is a bit hard to get to – you may want to take a 4x4. Ask a local for the best way to get there when you want to go, as the conditions tend to change with the weather.

Reduit beach

Best for families

Reduit is one of the most well-known family beaches on St. Lucia for a reason: It’s got tons of amenities. For one thing, it’s located in the capital of Castries, super close to lots of beach shops and restaurants in the adjacent Rodney Bay village ( Spinnakers is a perennial favorite for bar-and-grill cuisine).

There are also lots of places to rent snorkeling equipment or try windsurfing or water skiing or jet skiing. But the piece de resistance may just be Splash Island, the Caribbean’s first open-water sports park that features inflatable slides, swings, monkey bars, and even a climbing wall.

For all of the lively activity, though, the best part about Reduit is that it doesn’t ever feel annoyingly packed or loud. It may be perfect for kids and families, but with about five miles of sand, there’s certainly room to spread out – so it doesn’t feel overly crowded. And the waters are super calm, too (basically zero waves).

Cas en Bas beach

Best for local life

For beach bums on a mission to find the local hangout spot, the beachfront shack that truly captures the spirit of your destination of choice, Cas en Bas is for you. And that’s because it’s home to Marjorie’s, one of the island’s most popular spots for local flavor — in all senses of the word. The owner, Marjorie, serves up tasty and affordable meals that attract both locals and travelers alike.

But the real appeal is Marjorie herself, whose warm and welcoming vibe reels you in and makes you want to hang out all day (there’s even a photo of Marjorie with the late Amy Winehouse, who was known for doing just that).

Aside from Marjorie’s, the rest of the beach at Cas en Bas highlights the local life, too. Located on the northeast coast – away from the more touristy west side – the beach has a more rugged and homey feel, with local men and women fishing along the shoreline. You’ll even spot the occasional horse (and yes, you can ride them).

Anse Chastanet beach

Best for black sand lovers

First things first: This entire beach is technically inside a resort of the same name. But don’t worry – it’s free to enter whether you’re a guest or not. Just park your car in the resort’s free parking lot, and walk right on in.

Now, the beach itself: It is stunning! As the darkest black sand beach on the island, Anse Chastanet reflects St. Lucia’s volcanic history. It’s also one of those beaches where you feel completely immersed in nature, as it’s lined with tall palm trees and other lush foliage, and you can even hear the tropical birds chirping in the background.

Plus, thanks to the beach’s coral reef, there’s epic snorkeling and diving right there by the shore – no need to take a guided boat tour out to deeper waters (though you can definitely do that, too). For those seeking even more serenity and seclusion, there’s a sweet little walking path on the north side of the beach that leads to an even smaller and quieter beach, Anse Mamin.

Pigeon Island National Landmark

Best beach for culture buffs

Located on the northern side of the island, Pigeon Island is a 44-acre national landmark and island reserve that, contrary to its name, is not actually an island – it was joined to the mainland in 1972. The reserve has two lovely beaches with crystal-clear water, soft sand, and gorgeous mountain backdrops to boot.

But Pigeon Island isn’t only about the beaches. While there, travelers can also visit the nearby Pigeon Island Museum and Interpretive Centre to learn about the island’s colonial history.

After that, most visitors hike to the top of Fort Rodney, where you can explore historic ruins – and check out the sweeping panoramic views of the landscape below. On a clear day, you can even see the nearby island Martinique in the distance!

Located next to the Redpath Sugar Refinery (hence its sweet name and those candy-pink umbrellas), this sandy patch in the city used to be a parking lot. It’s a favorite for locals who live and work downtown as a sunbathing spot or a place to sit back and enjoy a warm evening.

That said, it's also plopped in the middle of a rather industrial part of the city. Lake views might not be the selling point here (you’re likely to see a freight ship docked nearby to transport all that sugar). But what Sugar Beach does provide is a quick beach fix in between the concrete and urban grit, which is actually quite cool.

Sunnyside Beach, Sunnyside

Best for a seaside vibe

The West End's nomination for the best beach in Toronto feels like a mini seaside getaway. Sunnyside Beach doesn’t come with fine, silky sand – it’s more on the pebbly side – but it’s still a popular hub for those who love an active afternoon. This beach is set next to a long boardwalk that's popular for jogging, walking and cycling, and the shorefront has beach volleyball nets and paddleboard and kayak rentals during the summer. At certain times of year, there's even competitive dragon boat racing.

Pick up a bike from the city's bike-share scheme, cycle down to the water and chill on this laid-back beach. If you’re seeking an even more laid-back vibe, the historic and Mediterranean-inspired Sunnyside Pavillion on the beach comes with a restaurant and bar, ample outdoor seats, frosty cocktails and sometimes even some live music.

Bluffer’s Park Beach, Scarborough Bluffs

Best for feeling miles from the city

The Scarborough Bluffs are one of Toronto’s most unexpected finds – a cliff-backed stretch of lakeshore running for 14km (9 miles). These rocky dramatic cliffs formed over the last 100,000 years, creating a scenic backdrop along the water’s edge. Centre Island Beach, Centre Island

Best for families

One of the coolest things about Toronto? The islands that sit in the lake, just off the downtown shore. The ten small Toronto Islands (connected by bridges) were formed due to erosion from the Scarborough Bluffs. For Torontonians, it’s a summer tradition to leap on the ferry and head over to these car-free islands for a day of fun chilling on some of the most family-friendly beaches in Toronto.

Topping the list is Centre Island Beach on Centre Island. It may not be the islands’ most aesthetically perfect stretch of sand, but it is easy to get to once you hop off the Centre Island ferry (follow the signs by foot or by bike) and it places you right by the Centreville Amusement Park. The beach is a mix of sand and rocks, but it comes with a breakwater to keep the water calm, making it great for families. If you’re looking to take a dip, the west side of the beach has the best swimming.

Hanlan’s Point Beach, Centre Island

Best for the body-confident!

Not for the faint of heart, nor the shy, this beach on Centre Island is the city’s only official clothing-optional beach. The one-kilometer stretch of sand is hidden away thanks to sandy dunes and brush, so you won’t accidentally land on this beach without some intention of going there. If you are looking to bare it all, take the Hanlan’s ferry from downtown and follow the signs and path to the clothing-optional section of beach.

Keep in mind that part of the beach is not clothing-optional, so make sure you’re in the right place before you disrobe. On warm days, you’ll find this small strip of sand bustling with sunbathers of all ages, maybe with a bonfire or two, some BBQs and a lot of yachts anchored off-shore. If you want to flaunt your body positivity, just bring a towel and sunscreen and strip down (to whatever level of nudity you want) on arrival.

Ward’s Island Beach, Ward's Island

Best for a quiet escape

If you’re looking to escape the crowds of Centre Island Beach, make your way over to Ward’s Island Beach. This smaller stretch of sand is more of a local favorite, attracting many island residents, and it's accessible by a 3km (1.9-mile) boardwalk linking the two beaches. It’s a bit rockier than some Toronto beaches, so bring water shoes if you have them (expect sand until you get to the water, then knobbly pebbles).

Even if you don't go in, you’ll get great views of the city from this vantage point. Ward's definitely has a more laid-back vibe, and you can enjoy the sun, read a book or have a picnic and forget you're in a major city. If you need food, rather than the pizza and ice-cream offerings at Centre Island Beach, hit the Rectory Cafe at Ward's Island for wine, salads, snacks and yummy treats.

Woodbine Beach, Ashbridges Bay Park

Best for people-watching

Hands down the busiest and most frequented beach on our list, Woodbine Beach is located in the east end of the city at Ashbridges Bay Park. And it’s your spot to get a glimpse of life as a Torontonian. Head here for people-watching, an upbeat vibe, music, volleyball and sunbathing, in a handy location just east of Old Toronto.

If relaxing is your thing, this might not be the beach for you, because things are definitely lively. On summer holidays such as Canada Day or Labour Day, thousands of people flock to the sandy shore to see fireworks. But on any warm day, you’ll find throngs of people with towels catching the rays and long lines to get the beach volleyball nets, plus people kayaking and canoeing and more.

Because it’s busy, you’re going to want to nab a prime beach spot early (before 10am). Public transit (buses and streetcars) are usually packed, and parking will be scarce, so take an Uber or ride a bike to the park for minimum stress.

Kew-Balmy Beach

Best for nostalgia

We’re going to say that Kew-Balmy Beach is not only one of the best beaches in Toronto, but also one of the most underrated. It's less hectic and bustling than its sister beach at Woodbine, perhaps due to the slightly grittier sand, and has an old-fashioned local feeling. Think off-leash dog areas, laid-back vibes and far fewer beach volleyball courts and activities.

This is where you’ll want to throw down your towel, put your headphones on and listen to a podcast, or read a book. Another highlight is the famed lifeguard station – built in the 1920s, it’s one of the last historic structures along Toronto’s waterfront. You'll also be steps away from Kew Gardens and Beaches Park.

Cherry Beach, Port Lands

Best for making a noise

Hands up if you’re looking for a beach and music! On the edge of the Port Lands zone, Cherry Beach is also known as Toronto’s dance beach. Dance parties have been happening here on Sundays since the early 2000s, and if you’re looking for a lively summer hangout, Cherry Beach has your name all over it.

The beach is tucked onto the edge of a mostly industrial area, and you’ll need to bypass the incredibly popular Cabana Pool Bar and music venue Rebel to find this sandy haven. But it’s worth it. It’s a great hang-out spot if you’re looking to meet up with friends; bring your portable speakers, some food and friends and you’ll be all set.

One thing you can’t miss while here is the Cherry Beach Lifeguard station, nicknamed "the cottage" because it looks like a tiny house. It’s not as well-known as the Kew-Balmy Beach lifeguard station, but it has just as much charm.

Not only is Turin fashionably elegant, handsome and seductive, the capital of Piedmont also enjoys an enviable location for exploring northwest Italy with ease.

When the joys of serial sightseeing or summer in the Savoy city begin to wane, there are a myriad of different destinations to escape to for a day. Vineyard, palace garden, mountain pasture or alpine peak: whatever bucolic change of scene you yearn for, Turin (and its easy transport connections) can oblige.

Here are six of the top day trips from Turin, each no more than a couple of hours by e-bike, bus, train or car.

Head to Via Lattea for alpine thrills and spills

It is hard to resist the call of the Alps in Turin: their enticing, snow-capped peaks can be seen tantalizingly on the horizon from any number of shopping thoroughfares and viewpoints in the city. On winter weekends torinesi head out of town to fly down slopes and warm the cockles with mugs of vin brûlé (mulled wine) at the resorts of the huge Via Lattea ski area. Come summer, walkers, nature lovers and fun-loving families flock to the same alpine pastures, now sprinkled with wildflowers and whistling marmots, to escape the city’s intense heat and embrace nature through a range of outdoor activities.

Whether you opt to explore the region by car or on foot, set out early in the morning for Pian del Colle (4740ft/1445m), a tiny hamlet close to the border with France. From here, head uphill towards Les Granges de la Vallée Étroite along a forest trail hugging the main road. At an altitude of 5800ft (1768m), sit down to a hearty lunch of cheesy, silky polenta topped with sausage ragú alongside a generous beer at Rifugio I Re Magi.

How to get there : Trains leave every hour from Torino Porta Nuova station to Bardonecchia (90 minutes, €15/$15.75 round trip), from where free buses ( Linea 3, 9 minutes) shuttle walkers to Melezet; Pian del Colle is a 25-minute walk from here. By car, Les Granges de la Vallée Étroite is an hour and 40 minutes’ drive from Turin.

Feast on dizzying Savoy splendor at Reggia di Venaria Reale

Built as a 17th-century hunting lodge, Unesco-listed Reggia di Venaria Reale was the expansive residence of the Savoy royal family. An impressive estate with 150 acres of manicured grounds and a gargantuan baroque palace, this half-day trip dazzles visitors with royal apartments, salons, hallways and countless other rooms dripping in frescoes, gild and stucco. Its far-from-modest vegetable patch and kitchen garden is the largest in Italy, and lunch at Michelin-starred restaurant Dolce Stil Novo – with its dreamy terrace overlooking palatial pea-green lawns – is a romantic date to remember. How to get there : Pick up a public-sharing [To]Bike on Piazza Castello or Piazza San Carlo in Turin and pedal 10km to Venaria Reale along the Corona Verde Stura cycling route; the trail links several royal residences in Piedmont. By bus, it takes 30 minutes and costs €4 ($4.20) for a round trip with a one-day GTT ticket (€3/$3.15 if bought via the GTT To Move app) with bus No 11 from the city center. Or hop aboard the Venaria Express bus shuttle (€3.40/$3.60 round trip on weekdays; €7/$7.35 on weekends) from Piazza Castello or Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

In Bra, you can stuff yourself silly with true Slow Food

A small, unassuming town in provincial Piedmont, Bra makes for a thrilling pilgrimage no self-respecting foodie should miss. This was where the global Slow Food movement – which embraces the delights of naturally produced, locally sourced gastronomy – took root in 1986. Wander around the historic center to uncover tiny, family-run shops bursting with organic sausages, handcrafted chocolates and seasonal zero-kilometer farm produce – testimony to Slow Food’s contagious go-slow vibe, green thinking and sustainable soul.

Post-stroll, take lunch – alfresco in the courtyard on warm days – at Osteria del Boccondivino, Slow Food’s backstreet HQ. A rustic temple to regional produce, this authentic osteria woos culinary curios with local delicacies like salsiccia di Bra (the spicy local sausage), “Gobbi di Nizza Monferrato” cardoons (wild artichokes) and veal tripe. Don’t miss out.

Devote the afternoon (if you can still move) to tasting unusual vintages at the Banca del Vino, the wine cellar inside Slow Food’s University of Gastronomic Sciences in the neighboring village of Pollenzo.

Savor Piedmontese wine country in Langhe

South of Turin, the Langhe wine region is renowned for its reds, in particular Barolo – made from 100% nebbiolo grapes and aged for at least two years in oak barrels, and produced in a very limited zone around the namesake town. The next village over is La Morra, with a beautifully maintained historic core that sits proudly atop sloping vineyards. Meander through them to reach the vivid Cappella delle Brunate, a very unique (and Insta-worthy) “chapel” painted by American artist Sol LeWitt, then sit down at Osteria More e Macine for a plate of supple tajarin – the delicate Piedmontese iteration of tagliatelle – and a glass of local, robust red wine.

How to get there : Trains leave every hour from Torino Porta Susa to Alba (90 minutes, €11.80/$12.40 round trip), from where buses on line 66 continue to La Morra (30 minutes).

Explore an ancient abbey with bird’s-eye views at Sacra di San Michele

Crowning Monte Pirchiriano (3156ft/962m), the hilltop Sacra di San Michele is a brooding abbey dating to 987 CE, with celestial views of the Susa Valley far below. Just 25 miles (40km) from Turin, the complex was originally a Benedictine monastery, later abandoned for a couple of centuries before being taken over in 1836 by the Savoys.

Post–abbey visit, swing past Birrificio San Michele, a brewery at the bottom of the mountain, for a platter of tangy salumi paired with a flight of aromatic craft beers. On weekends, the artisanal brewery offers free tours of its production area.

How to get there : Trains leave hourly from Torino Porta Nuova station to Avigliana (30 minutes, €6.20/$6.50 round trip) from where it is a 90-minute hike uphill. April to October, bus line 253 loops five times a day between Avigliana train station and the abbey (30 minutes, €4.40/$4.60 round trip).

Take in fashion, design and Leonardo’s Last Supper in Milan

Most urbanites who find themselves as far north as Turin can’t resist the hankering to drop in on northern Italy’s other great city. Fast, fashionable and with an enviably design-centric soul, glamorous Milan is the country’s edgiest metropolis and a brilliant contrast to its more traditional Turinese sister. Milan’s sublime pink-marble cathedral, the Unesco-listed church safeguarding Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper , and your pick of the best city museums make for an enthralling day out. Inch Strand, County Kerry is popular with surfers and beginners

This 5km-long (3-mile) sand spit extending into Dingle Bay is Ireland’s most famous beach, having starred in at least three blockbuster movies. If surfing isn’t your thing, Inch is also a big birdwatching spot, but ultimately it’s about a walk and a swim.

Banna Strand, County Kerry, has high dunes with stunning views

If the world knows about Inch Strand, then this huge Blue Flag beach about 13km (8 miles) northwest of Tralee is very much a local favorite. On summer weekends – or anytime it’s not raining – folks from Tralee and around make their way here to walk the full length of its 6km (3.7 miles), making it one of Ireland’s biggest beaches. Thanks to the warming waters of the Gulf Stream a swim here isn’t the mark of madness, especially in those glorious September days when the sea is softened by a long summer, but even if you don’t fancy getting into the water there are some stunning views from the 10m-high (33ft) dunes – look southwest and take in the glory of Mt Brandon and the Dingle Hills.

Trawmore Bay, Achill Island, County Mayo is a true beauty spot

This beautiful Blue Flag beach forms a 4km-long (2.5-mile) crescent of golden sand between the villages of Keel and Dookinelly, on Achill Island’s western seaboard. It doesn’t get the oohs and aahs reserved for Keem Bay – only 3km (1.9 miles) away – but this mix of sand and shingle is a beauty in its own right, and a popular spot for bodyboarders and surfers who test their skills in the Atlantic breakers. Swimmers should stick to the western (Keel) end as the currents are very strong. Trawmore is also one of the most photographed of all Irish beaches, especially from the vantage point of the Minaun Cliffs at the beach’s eastern end, which rise to a height of 466m (1528ft) and is the perfect spot to catch the beach looking its best.

Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Bay, County Galway, have dazzling white sand

The scalloped coastline of Connemara is home to some gorgeous beaches, none more beautiful than the twins of the Errisbeg Peninsula, 3km (1.9 miles) west of Roundstone. Separated by a dog-bone-shaped sand spit and tombolo are the golden sands of Gurteen Bay and Dog’s Bay, made up of dazzling white sand. Unlike other beaches, the sands are not formed from rocks but from crushed seashells, which give them more of a feel of the Caribbean.

Trá Mór in Dunfanaghy, County Donegal, might be Ireland's prettiest "big beach"

In Irish, "trá mór" (or Tramore) just means "big beach," and while the country has more than a handful of them bearing the name, this secluded gem in the shadow of the Horn Head peninsula is arguably the prettiest. It takes a bit of effort to get there: from the arched bridge at the end of the inlet that marks the end of Killihoey Beach (another looker) you have to clamber through the wind-blown grassy dunes for about 15 minutes, but your reward is a 2km-long (1.2-mile) curve so isolated and beautiful that you’ll instinctively want to keep the secret all to yourself. And, on most days bar the warmest, you can.

Ballyquin near Ardmore, County Waterford, is the best secluded beach

About 5km (3 miles) northeast of the popular seaside town of Ardmore is this wonderfully secluded beach, an arc of beautiful white sand that at its eastern edge gives way to tidal rock pools, above which are the ruins of a former stud. Unlike the much more popular beach in Ardmore itself, Ballyquin remains relatively unfrequented: locals come here for morning swims while, in the evenings, it's a good spot for surf fishing, with people casting a rod in the hope of catching some flatfish or a bass. To get here, follow the road sign off the R673 for Goat Island.

Streedagh Strand, County Sligo, is the perfect beach for swimmers

Of Sligo ’s enviably rich selection of fine beaches, curving, dune-backed Streedagh Strand is the preferred choice for those who actually fancy a swim. Strandhill and Mullaghmore  – the county’s better-known spots – are fine for surfing, but Streedagh’s sheltered location in a semi-protected, calm bay makes it the swimmer’s choice. The sand dunes at the back of the beach offer another bit of protection, atop which on a clear day there are unobstructed views to the north of the gorgeous mountains of Donegal. Offshore – and occasionally visible at low tide – are the remains of three ships that ran aground here during the Spanish Armada of 1588.

Killiney Beach, County Dublin, is the best beach near Dublin

As city beaches go, this one in the south Dublin suburb of Killiney is a treat. The long stony beach is backed up by some of the most exclusive addresses in Dublin, the homes of some of the biggest celebrities like Bono and Enya, who have unfettered views of the wide arc of Killiney Bay, which is said to bear more than a striking resemblance to the Bay of Naples – hence the Italian names of many of the streets around here. The beach itself is popular with swimmers, walkers, and families on a day out: on a fine day you’ll be in plenty of company, but the walk from end to end is one of the nicest in Dublin.

Ballymastocker Bay, County Donegal, is an award-winning scenic beach

The tawny-colored beach of Ballymastocker Bay on the western shore of Lough Swilly stretches for almost 2km (1.2 miles) from the holiday village of Portsalon (which gives it its alternative name of Portsalon Beach). This Blue Flag beauty has wonderful views of the Inishowen Peninsula, and the beach itself is highly photogenic too: as you come around the high headland on the R268 Knockalla coastal drive there’s a pull-off spot that makes for the perfect view of the beach stretching right up to Portsalon.

10 of the best beaches in Ireland: secluded coves, scenic strands, and wild Atlantic surf

Colorado is famous for many things - soaring peaks, desert mesas, great skiing - but it’s not the first place you think of when considering a beach destination.

Yet Colorado is rife with beaches: in the mountains, the plains, even the high desert. Some have soft sand and shimmering water, others have gravely shorelines along remote lakes or rivers – each beautiful in their own way and each worthy of a visit.

Medano Creek

Best beach in the desert

Appearing like magic in the sandy expanse of Great Sand Dunes National Park, Medano Creek is born from snowmelt that flows from the nearby Sangre de Cristo mountains. Existing for just a few months each year, the creek is at its strongest in late spring, when the water is almost two feet-deep and 50 feet-wide. The fast shallow creek flows in small waves over its sandy floor, and the soft beach is ideal for wading, splashing, even skim-boarding and inner-tubing, always with views of the park’s majestic dunes, the tallest in North America.

Ridgway State Park

Best drive-up beach

Turquoise waters and breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains are the hallmarks of the beaches at Ridgway State Park. A five-mile-long reservoir has several sandy areas, varying from a protected cove with a wide sandy beach - popular with families for its calm waters and playground - to a spectacular drive-up beach that’s perfect for launching paddleboards and kayaks. Just park and paddle away.

Steamboat Lake State Park

Best Alpine view beach

A forest backdrop of aspen trees and stunning views of Hahns Peak make the beach at Steamboat Lake State Park one of Colorado’s most picturesque. A high elevation lake (8100ft), by mid-summer the water is warm enough to dip in at the sandy swimmers-only beach. Other parts of the lake are designated for watersports enthusiasts, including water skiing, paddle-boarding, boating and fishing. With over a thousand surface acres of water, there’s plenty of space for all to enjoy and explore the lake, and to soak up the alpine views.

Grand Lake

Best something for everyone beach

Grand Lake is a behemoth beauty, the largest and deepest natural lake in all of Colorado. The main beach, located in its namesake town, has soft golden sand with shallow waters and is backed by a thick grassy area, perfect for families and picnickers. The nearby boardwalk provides midday distraction - an ice cream cone, a photo-op, even souvenir shopping. For something a bit more active, the marina has pontoon boats, paddle-boards and kayaks, even fishing gear for rent – great ways to explore the lake’s lesser known coves, shores and islands.

Boulder Reservoir

Best family-friendly beach

Just 15 minutes from downtown Boulder, Boulder Reservoir is a 700-acre man-made lake appealing especially to families. Its wide sandy beach offers plenty of material for sand castles, and the shallow roped-off waters and lifeguards put parents of young children at ease. Older kids and grown-ups can explore the reservoir on kayaks, paddle-boards and sailboats too – all available for rent onsite. Modern facilities with bathrooms and a snack bar seal the deal. The mountain views don’t hurt either.

Blue Mesa Reservoir

Best dramatic view beach

Sweeping mesas, towering volcanic spires and secluded canyons surround the sapphire waters of Blue Mesa Reservoir. It’s a dramatic place, to say the least. With nearly 100 miles of shoreline, this otherworldly reservoir forms the heart of the Curecanti National Recreation Area. Many come for the boating and fishing – it is the largest kokanee salmon and lake trout fishery in Colorado – while persistent winds and calm waters make it popular with windsurfers too. For swimming, hardcore visitors scramble down the often steep and rocky shoreline but for those looking for a gentler entry head to the beaches of Bay of Chickens, Dry Creek and Old Highway 50.

Devil’s Punch Bowl

Best hidden ‘beach’

A short hike just outside of Aspen leads to a series of small waterfalls from the Roaring Fork River that converge into a dramatic emerald pool called the Devil’s Punch Bowl. Huge undulating boulders stand like sentinels around the swimming hole, making for a great picnic spot deep in the forest, the sound of falling water all around. Thrill-seekers jump from the smooth granite walls into the chilly waters – a ten- to 25-foot plunge – though most simply enjoy the sight for what it is: a beautiful hidden forest beach.

Horsetooth Reservoir

Best city beach

Stretching 6.5 miles along the western edge of Fort Collins, Horsetooth Reservoir is a popular swimming and boating spot for locals. Two designated swimming beaches have protected waters and soft sand, including ‘Sunrise’ beach with spectacular views of the Dakota Hogback Ridge. Picnic tables and grills dot both sites. The reservoir’s marina also offers speedboat rentals (wake-boarding, anyone?) and anglers will find there’s no shortage of good fishing spots, especially in the reservoir’s hidden coves.

Twin Lakes Reservoir

Best camping beach

Twin Lakes Reservoir is a pair of connected glacial-fed lakes with spectacular views of one of Colorado’s tallest peak, Mount Evans. The reservoir’s waters are calm and remarkably tolerable in the summer (65 to 75 degrees), its shoreline covered in soft tawny sand. Families flock to its waters in the summer, filling its campgrounds with tents and RVs. A party-like atmosphere can take over on weekends, but mostly people come for days filled with sandcastle-making, paddle-boarding and fishing…a veritable beach escape in the mountains.

Jackson Lake State Park

Best beach in the plains

Jackson Lake State Park is home to the most popular beach in Colorado’s eastern plains – a beacon in a sea of fields. Fed by the South Platte River, the lake is known for its mild, shallow waters and shores that are lined with sand like brown sugar. Beach-goers gravitate towards the southern and western shores, where designated swim areas feature wide beaches, picnic tables and facilities like restrooms and showers. Others jump on paddle-boards, jet skis and motor boats to explore the waters. Visitors can (and do) stay the night, sleeping in RVs or camping in lakefront tents, their fire pits lighting up the night.
